Thuso Mbedu was a star long before she ever hit the screens in the US and was already highly-revered and respected in her home of South Africa, but many audiences overseas were unfamiliar with her before this role. She could not have found a better way to introduce herself than Barry Jenkins’ Amazon Prime series ‘The Underground Railroad’.
In this harrowing tale of slavery and liberation, Thuso plays the character of Cora and explores what it meant to be exist during that time as a Black woman. In this conversation, we spoke about the overlap between our African heritage and the experience of lasting impact of racial oppression, her process of spiritually separating herself from the role once the cameras have stopped rolling and what it means to be able to star in a series of this magnitude. I hope you gain as much from it as I did!
